Protector of the Bits

Many years ago I purchased this plaster of Paris gargoyle and brought it to my office. When I moved to a different (and somewhat smaller) office, I searched for the proper place to put this guy.

That is when I saw a nail in the wall outside of my office. I recalled that a clock used to hang there. The clock was gone and the nail available, so I hung this guy out there to watch the hallway. A few months later during a discussion with a co-worker, I joked about how funny it would be for it to have eyes which would light up whenever someone walked by.

I realized that I could do that – all I needed was some LEDs (of which I have an ample supply) and a motion detector. And that is just what I did.

Whenever anyone walks past my office, this guy’s eyes light up. It is very satisfying, though nearly no one notices it. No matter – I know that sooner or later someone will notice for and go WTF? I consider it a test of how perceptive people are – and well, the results are not encouraging.

What I regret is that our building is considered a secure environment and the hall lights must remain on at all times. I so much would like to see the reaction of someone walking down the dark hall and encountering this guy’s eyes lighting up.

I’m thinking about adding sound so it will not only flash eyes but growl just a little bit. That would be a lot more fun.

Grew up with a screwdriver in one hand and a soldering gun in the other. Over 40 years as a jack of all trades developer/administrator/installer. Fascinated at how things are put together (and taken apart) who started making things out of broken computer components and have since gone off the cliff, seeing nearly every piece of 'junk' as materials waiting to be adopted and made into art. "Your junk are my art supplies." And yes, I was infected with Monty Python at a delicate young age and do not regret it :-)
